State Authorization Regulations

SARA logo
  • Are you currently enrolled or do you plan to enroll in online courses at Washington State Community College?
  • Will you live outside of Ohio during your attendance at WSCC?

If you answered yes to both questions, the following state authorization information applies to you.

Washington State Community College has been approved by the State of Ohio to participate in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements. NC-SARA is a voluntary, regional approach to state oversight of postsecondary distance education. Check the Full SARA States & Institutions. Please click HERE to complete the WSCC’s Complaint Form.

What is SARA?

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement is an agreement among member states, districts and territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs. It is intended to make it easier for students to take online courses offered by postsecondary institutions based in another state. SARA is overseen by a National Council and administered by four regional education compacts.

What are the benefits of SARA to students?

  • Expands access to educational offerings.
  • Should lead to better resolution of complaints from students in SARA states.
  • Reduces a rapidly growing institutional cost that is in one way or another passed along to students.
  • Should enhance overall quality of distance education

Academic Quality Improvement Program at Washington State

Washington State Community College is accredited through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and participates in the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP).

Washington State has chosen to use AQIP (Academic Quality Improvement Program) as the process for maintaining its accreditation. AQIP infuses the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of colleges and universities by providing an alternative process through which an already-accredited institution can maintain its accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. With AQIP, an institution demonstrates it meets accreditation standards and expectations through sequences of events that align with those ongoing activities that characterize organizations striving to improve their performance.

Through AQIP we will create a comprehensive approach to continuously improve institutional effectiveness. As part of the AQIP process we have: created four Action Projects; revised the institution's mission, vision and values statements; and produced an AQIP Systems Portfolio to describe our College's current efforts toward continuous improvement.
